The Superintendent of Police (SP) in Narayanganj has claimed to have made ‘significant progress’ in the multiple-murder investigation, but says he needs more time to arrest the killers.

“Ten or 12 days after the incident is not a huge time. Give us time, have faith. We want to provide something good,” Khandker Mohid Uddin said at a press briefing on Sunday.
His appeal came after the families of the victims expressed frustration as none of the accused had been arrested even 10 days after the bodies of seven abducted men were found.
Seven men, including Narayanganj City Councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were abducted from the city on Apr 27.
Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakhyya River over two days - six on April 30 and the seventh on May 1.
Then Narayanganj SP Syed Nurul Islam was removed two days after the seven men were abducted.
Three days after the bodies were recovered, Mohid Uddin took charge. He had led the investigation into the Narsinghdi mayor Lokman Hossain murder.
Different sources from law-enforcing agencies indicated that prime accused in the Narayanganj murders, Ward-2 Councillor Nur Hossain, has fled the country.
But police have no real information regarding that claim, said Mohid Uddin.
About the status of the investigation, he said, “We might get valuable information from Nur Hossain’s driver Mohibullah and his brother-in-law Samrat who were arrested from Noakhali.”
The SP also hoped to get some information from slain lawyer Chandan Sarkar’s mobile phone.
He said making blanket arrest would not help. “We are making sure that no innocent people get harassed.”
Families of the seven victims have alleged that three, now sacked, RAB officials were involved in the abduction and killings.
They are former Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mohammad and Maj Arif Hossain of the army and naval officer Lt Commander MM Rana.
Mohammad, who was the RAB-11 commanding officer in Narayanganj, is the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
These three officers were removed from the force two days after the abductions. Later, their parent forces sent them on forced retirement after the allegations were levelled against them.
The High Court on Sunday also ordered their arrest after hearing a writ petition filed by Sarkar’s son-in-law and two others.
SP Mohid Uddin said police would follow the court’s directive regarding arrest of the former RAB officers.
The state minister for home affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, has also said the government would take all necessary measures as per law following the order to arrest the trio.
