"I am here to encourage Bangladeshis to support the US in the World Cup," says Brent Christensen

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen has urged Bangladeshis to support his country in the World Cup, saying backing America “in the long run” always pays off.

His comments came after a meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman at his ministry on Saturday, which officials described as routine ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s foreign visits to Malaysia and China.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the envoy shifted away from bilateral issues and referred to the US team’s recent World Cup victory over Australia.

“I was down here for a very important reason. Last night, the US won a resounding victory over Australia in the World Cup and we are on to the next round. So I am here to encourage the FM and all Bangladeshis to support the US in the World Cup going forward. Because you could never go wrong in the long run in betting on the US,” he said.

The prime minister is set to begin his first foreign tour starting Sunday, visiting Malaysia before travelling to China for a six-day trip.

In China, he will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Dalian from Jun 23-24 alongside bilateral engagements, officials said.

A bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang is scheduled for Jun 25 at the Great Hall of the People, followed by a meeting with President Xi Jinping on Jun 26.

Officials said 13 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and two agreements are expected to be signed covering education, agriculture, trade, investment, development cooperation, media cooperation, and green energy.
