An Al Jazeera cameraman has been killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, marking the latest attack on journalists covering the years-long war.
In a statement on Saturday, the Qatari broadcaster strongly condemned the targeting and killing of Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Ahmed Wishah.
The strike targeted a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, it said, adding: “This constitutes a new and flagrant violation of all international laws and norms, and reflects a continued systematic policy of targeting journalists and silencing the voice of truth.”
Even though Al Jazeera said at least 10 people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza throughout the day, health officials told Reuters that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least nine people, including a child and three women.
Several others were injured in the incidents.
The Israeli military did not immediately comment on any of the incidents.
Ahmed’s brother Mohammed Wishah, who was also an Al Jazeera journalist, was killed by Israeli shelling while travelling in his vehicle on Apr 8.
The next day, the Israeli military said it had killed Mohammed because he was a “key terrorist in Hamas’ rocket and weapons production headquarters”.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, no fewer than 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed since Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza began in October 2023.
Hamas-led fighters killed 1,200 people during their cross-border attack into Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli tallies.
The Gaza health ministry said more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since then.
An October ceasefire has halted major fighting between Hamas and Israel, but it has not ended Israeli attacks.
Gaza's health ministry said more than 1,010 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire. Militants killed four Israeli soldiers in Gaza over the same period.
