A Chattogram court has sentenced a man to life in prison in a murder case over the killing of a shopkeeper in 2017.
The court of Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Tajul Islam delivered the verdict on Sunday morning.
The convict Md Ismail Hossain Sujan hailed from Khanpur village in Noakhali’s Sharifpur Union.
The court’s Bench Assistant SM Kawsar Sagar told bdnews24.com, "As the charges against him were proven, the court has sentenced the convicted Md Ismail Hossain Sujan to life in prison while fining him Tk 50,000. Defaulting on the fine will add one more year to his sentence."
Suman is absconding, he said.
According to the case dossier, 20-year-old Abu Naser was killed on Mar 24, 2017, at the Alankar Shopping Complex in the port city’s Pahartali Thana. He hailed from Chattogram’s Sitakunda Upazila.
Naser ran a shop called Momtaz Telecom on the second floor of the Alankar Shopping Complex.
Another person named Ferdous Wahid ran another shop called SM Telecom on the second floor of the shopping center. Sujan worked as a mobile mechanic by renting a part of that shop for Tk 4,000 per month.
On Mar 6, 2017, Sujan rented part of another shop called Janani Telecom on the second floor of the shopping center without informing Ferdous, the owner of SM Telecom, and moved there.
Four days later, on Mar 10 of that year, when SM Telecom owner Ferdous demanded that month's rent, Ismail gave him Tk 1,000 and said he would pay the rest later.
Later, on the night of Mar 24, Ferdous and Naser went to Sujan to ask for the rest of the money. An argument then broke out inside Janani Telecom between Ferdous and Sujon.
At one point, when Naser stepped forward to stop the fight, he was stabbed by Naser on the chest and lower abdomen with a pair of scissors.
People from the market came forward to rescue Naser and rushed him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where he died that night.
The next day Momtaz Begum, the mother of the deceased Naser, filed a murder case with the city's Pahartali Police Station, accusing Sujan.
The verdict was delivered on Sunday after 12 witnesses gave their testimony.
