Dhaka, Feb 15 (bdnews24.com) -- Retired sessions judge Mohammad Shahnewaz took oath as an election commissioner on Wednesday, after the tenure of M Shakhawat Hossain expired on Tuesday.
Chief justice Mohammad Muzammel Hossain administered the oath at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge around 11.30am.
EC secretary Mohammad Sadique was present.
Shahnewaz retired in 2008 as a district and sessions judge from Tangail. He was born on Sep 16, 1950 at Chandpur and took up the law profession in 1980.
Earlier, on Feb 8, president Zillur Rahman appointed Kazi Rakib as the new chief election commissioner and the other four as election commissioners. Former CSP officer Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed was sworn in as the new CEC the following day.
Following Rakib, retired additional secretary Mohammad Abu Hafiz, retired joint secretary Abdul Mobarak and retired brigadier general Mohammad Jabed Ali also took their oath as commissioners.
The swearing-in of retired sessions judge Mohammad Shahnewaz as the fourth commissioner was delayed as the tenure of M Shakhawat Hossain, a commissioner from the previous team, was scheduled to end on Feb 14.
