MP's wife ‘falls’ off roof, dies

Muntarin Mujib Chowdhury, 33, died on Tuesday night after reportedly falling off the roof of the six-storey building they lived in at Gulshan-2, Dhaka.

Muntarin slipped and fell, Nixon’s personal assistant Khandker Jahidur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Wednesday.

The lawmaker fell ill at home with respiratory problems after his wife's death but recovered on being given oxygen, said Rahman.

Muntarin had been rushed to Gulshan’s United Hospital in critical condition around 8:40pm on Tuesday, the hospital’s duty manager Mohammad Minhaz told bdnews24.com.

“She was admitted here with injuries. Later, she was admitted to the ICU where she died soon afterwards.”

Nixon and his wife, along with their daughter, lived in Flat 4-A on the fourth floor of Number 20, Road 76 in Gulshan-2.
Regarding a flurry of mixed reactions over her death, PA Jahidur Rahman said, “This is not a suicide. She slipped and fell.”
He said Nixon was at home when the accident took place.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan division Deputy Commissioner Lutful Kabir told bdnews24.com that the hospital authorities notified them about Muntarin’s death around 10pm on Tuesday.
“But they did not state the cause of the death.”
Police were yet to decide whether to autopsy the body to ascertain the nature of the death.
“No complaints have been lodged yet. We can’t do anything about this right now,” Kabir said.
Gulshan Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com police did not go to Nixon’s home because no complaints had been lodged.
Building security guard Md Masud told bdnews24.com Md Rabiul, the guard on Tuesday night’s shift, told him Muntarin had fallen from the fourth floor around 8:30pm. “Then she was taken to United Hospital where she died.”
Quoting members of the family, Nixon’s assistant Rahman said Muntarin’s Namaj-e-Janaza would be held at Gulshan’s Azad Mosque on Thursday.
She would be buried at Banani graveyard after her parents arrived from Canada.
People began gathering in front of the building from Wednesday morning.
No journalists have so far been able to speak to the victim’s family.
A person identifying himself as the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League in Shibchar, a constituency adjacent to that of Nixon’s, said he had come to Dhaka hearing news of the tragedy.
He spent several hours in front of the home but could not get in.
Another man, who identified himself as a family friend of the MP, but wished to remain anonymous, said Muntarin went to the terrace garden during the storm on Tuesday night, slipped in water and fell from there to the ground.
bdnews24.com found that there was a railing around the terrace on the fourth floor, but no garden was visible.
Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury Nixon, better known as Nixon Chowdhury, is the current MP from Faridpur-4 constituency. He ran independently in the 10th parliamentary election.
Later, he joined the ruling Awami League.
Nixon’s parents are cousins of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Anti-Corruption Commission has questioned him over Padma bridge graft allegations.
