The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed a chargesheet against Sheikh Hasina and 14 others over the “murder” of Hafizur Rahman Sumon, a Jubo Dal leader killed during the July Uprising in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Police recommended exempting 63 others from the charges, including Jatiya Party Presidium member and former Barisal-3 MP Golam Kibria Tipu, citing a lack of evidence linking them to the attack.
The chargesheet was submitted to the court on Feb 3 by Inspector Mohammad Atikur Rahman Khan of the Anti-Terrorism Unit’s Investigation Branch.
On Monday, SI Rafiqul Islam of prosecution police told bdnews24.com: “The charges against Sheikh Hasina and 14 others have been preliminarily proven. However, as evidence was not found against 63 individuals, we have recommended their discharge.”
Alongside Hasina, the chargesheet names Awami League General Secretary and former bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former law minister Anisul Huq, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Harun‑or‑Rashid Biswas, Manam Ahmed Ratul, Md Rayhan alias Rahel, Abdur Rahman Russell, Shahidul Islam alias Rana alias Lombu Rana, Sohag alias Rana, Asaduzzaman Nur alias Asad, and Tadi Raju.
The next hearing date has been set for Mar 8.
According to the chargesheet, on Aug 5, 2024 -- the final day of the July movement -- Sumon, joint convenor of Ward‑27 Jubo Dal, joined a protest near Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Adarsha Mohila College around 1pm.
Between 2pm and 2:30pm, Awami League activists attacked demonstrators, leaving Sumon critically injured.
Locals rescued him and admitted him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
He died there on Aug 16 at 6pm while under treatment.
His wife Bithi Khatun filed a case at Sher‑e‑Bangla Nagar Police Station on Oct 9, 2024, naming Hasina and 68 others, along with 20–30 unidentified individuals.
She told bdnews24.com: “When he was admitted to hospital, he could speak for two or three days. He told us who had attacked him. We filed the case against them. Now the chargesheet has been submitted.”
Bithi added: “I want justice for the guilty, but no innocent should be punished. I know the pain of a household without a man -- it collapses. The trial must be swift, and the real culprits must face exemplary punishment. My family has been destroyed.”
Speaking of her daughters, she said: “My elder girl is 12 and understands everything. The younger one is five and still asks about her father. She asks me where he has gone.”
With tears in her voice, she said: “I console her by saying her father has gone away and will return when she grows up. Those who made my daughters orphans must face exemplary punishment.”
