Charges against Chattogram Mayor Sahadat Hossain have been dropped in three cases filed under the Special Powers Act and the Explosives Act during the Awami League government's tenure.

Chattogram's Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman issued the order in the presence of the BNP leader on Tuesday.

"He was cleared in two cases in line with a state order, specifically from the Secretariat's law branch. In another case, the court accepted the final police report and discharged him," said Sahadat's lawyer Kamrul Islam Chowdhury.

"Two of these cases were filed under the Special Powers Act, and the other was under the Explosives Act. These cases were filed against him for participating in political programmes during the previous government's tenure."

He added that a total of 110 cases were filed against Sahadat under the Awami League regime. He has been acquitted or discharged in 40 of them so far.

Kamrul described the cases as "politically motivated".

Sahadat had previously served as convenor of the BNP's Chattogram city unit.
