Union council member Bachchu Mia, one of the accused arrested over the mob lynching of a mother and her two children in Cumilla’s Muradnagar, has initially agreed to give a confessional statement in court but ultimately refused to do so.

The court later ordered him to be sent to jail on Sunday evening, according to Cumilla Court Police Inspector Sadekur Rahman.

Earlier in the day, among the eight arrestees, Bachchu had expressed willingness to give a statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Following this, Judge Siddak Azad of Cumilla Judicial Magistrates' Court instructed the authorities to begin recording his statement.

The union council member is the third accused in this much-discussed murder case. His son, Atikur Rahman, has also been named as a suspect.

That same day, police produced six others, arrested by RAB in Dhaka, before the court which sent them to prison rejecting their bail pleas.

The day before, on Saturday evening, two other suspects apprehended by the army were brought to court by police. Senior Judicial Magistrate Muminul Hoque sent them to jail as well.

A group of people attacked a house in Koroibari of Bangra Bazar in Muradnagar around 9am on Jul 4, alleging drug dealing and criminal activities.

In this, Roksana Begum alias Rubi, 53, her children Rasel Mia, 35, and Taspiya Akhter alias Jonaki, 29, were beaten and hacked to death on the spot.

Rikta Begum, daughter of the deceased Rubi, initiated a case with Bangra Bazar police against 38 people and up to 25 unidentified individuals two days after the incident.

Eight people have been apprehended by the army and RAB in connection with the case so far.
