Police have confirmed the man arrested over the murder of Tawsif Rahman Sumon, the only son of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman, started abusing substances after losing his job as a soldier in the Bangladesh Army.
A case was filed over the murder with Rajpara Police Station in Rajshahi on Friday.
The body of the victim, a 16-year-old, was taken to his ancestral home in Jamalpur after post-mortem.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) spokesperson Gaziur Rahman said the lone suspect, Limon Mia, 34, is currently in police custody and receiving treatment at a hospital.
He has been shown arrested in the case and will be produced before the court as soon as he recovers from injuries.
A former Army soldier, Limon started abusing drugs after losing his job in 2018, said Gaziur. He married several years ago, but the marriage did not work out.
Limon had an acquaintance with the judge’s wife Tasmin Nahar Lucy, who used to lend money to the suspect.
He started threatening Tasmin after she refused to provide him with any more money. Tasmin filed a general diary over the matter on Nov 6 with Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet, the police said.
Gaziur said Rahman was appointed a labour court judge in Rajshahi a year ago and then made Metropolitan Sessions Judge in October. He lived with his wife and only son, Tawsif, in the city’s Dabtala area.
Around 2:30pm on Thursday, Limon went to the judge’s residence and stabbed Tawsif to death. Tasmin was injured while trying to intervene. Limon himself was also hurt during the scuffle.
Residents of the building rescued all three and took them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Tawsif dead.
Following the post-mortem on Friday morning, RMCH Associate Professor Kafil Uddin said: “Tawsif had two stab wounds on his right leg and one on the left, which severed blood vessels. He died from excessive internal bleeding.”
“The bruising on the neck may have been caused by suffocation using a soft fabric, though this was not the primary cause of death.”
Tawsif was a ninth-grade student at Rajshahi Government Laboratory School.
