A Dhaka court has ordered the arrest of former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak in an attempted murder case stemming from last year's July Uprising.
It also approved a petition to place former home secretary Jahangir Alam under arrest in a sedition case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana issued the orders on Sunday after hearing separate petitions from investigators, according to defence lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi.
The case against Palak relates to an incident on Jul 19 last year, when a man named Abdul Alim was shot in the eye outside SOS Hermann Gmeiner College in Mirpur. After months of treatment, Alim filed a case on Apr 1 this year.
Meanwhile, Alam faces charges brought by the BNP, accusing him and others of helping to stage elections without public votes during the previous Awami League government.
The case alleges the Election Commission failed to uphold its constitutional duty and instead used intimidation to conduct the polls.
Filed on Jun 22 at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the case implicates 19 people, including three former chief election commissioners, several election commissioners, and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
BNP leader Salah Uddin Khan, a former police officer, is the plaintiff.
Both Palak and Alam were present in court for the hearings.
