Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the main accused in the murder case of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Sohag, has reportedly confessed in court to the killing.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Tanvir Morshed Chowdhury of Kotwali police’s prosecution wing informed the court that he agreed to make the "confessional statement" on Sunday after being remanded for two 5-day periods.
Mohin was presented before the court by the case’s investigation officer, Kotwali Police Station chief Md Moniruzzaman, who made the plea to record the statement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman then recorded it. Following this, SI Tanvir said he would be sent to jail.
The court put Mohin under police custody for questioning for five days in two phases on Jul 10 and Jul 15, respectively.
Police have arrested nine people in connection with Sohag's murder.
The other arrestees are Titon Gazi, Md Alamgir, Monir alias Lomba Monir, Tarique Rahman Robin, Sajib Bepari, Md Rajib Bepari, Nannu Kazi, and Rizwan Uddin alias Abhijit Basu.
Of these, Monir, Alamgir, and Titon confessed to the crime on Jul 17, and Sajib on Jul 19.
Rajib is behind bars after being remanded. The other accused are on remand.
On the evening of Jul 9, due to a business dispute and previous enmity, Sohag was bludgeoned to death outside Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.
As video footage of the incident went viral on social media, it sparked widespread criticism nationwide.
Police and locals claim those involved in the murder and named behind the scenes are all known to each other, with some being former business associates of Sohag.
