The parents of 8-year-old Ramisa Akter testified before a Dhaka court in the case over her rape and murder in Pallabi.
On Tuesday, her father Abdul Hannan Molla and mother Parveen Akter gave detailed accounts of the events of May 19 before the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal.
The testimony later continued behind closed doors when Ramisa’s elder sister was called to the witness stand.
Hannan, the first witness, became emotional while testifying and was allowed to sit due to illness.
He told the court that on the day of the incident, he had left for work around 9:30am when his wife called him between 10am and 10:15am, saying Ramisa could not be found.
He said he rushed back home and found a crowd gathered outside the building.
“I ran upstairs and saw many people in front of my flat. My wife said Ramisa was trapped in the neighbouring flat. A man named Raju was trying to break down the door. I brought a hammer and helped break the lock along with others,” he said.
He added that once the door was broken, he saw blood inside the bathroom and a woman standing silently in the room.
“We found Ramisa’s head inside a bucket,” he told the court, adding that he lost consciousness at the scene.
He said he later filed the case at the police station.
During cross-examination, he confirmed his wife called him around 10–10:15am and said he returned home within 15–20 minutes.
He also told the defence lawyer he had no prior enmity with the suspects and had “never seen them before”.
Ramisa’s mother Parveen Akter then testified, describing how she had been cooking when the child went missing.
She said she initially assumed the children had gone outside, before realising Ramisa was not with her elder sister.
“I saw her sandal near the door. People tried to break the door. Inside, I saw blood in the bathroom and my daughter’s body parts separated,” she told the court, adding that the suspect woman Swapna Khatun was present at the scene.
She added that she later learned that Sohel Rana had fled after committing the crime.
The prosecution later sought in-camera testimony for Ramisa’s 16-year-old sister, which the court approved.
Several other witnesses are expected to testify sequentially as the trial continues.
