Rapid Action Battalion has arrested a death row convict 27 days after he escaped from Kashimpur jail in Dhaka’s Gazipur.
Emdadul Haque, also known as Gondar, was sentenced to death in a 2013 murder case.
He was arrested from Dhaka’s Bangshal area, RAB said in a statement on Monday.
He escaped from the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail on Aug 6, according to the elite police force.
The escape occurred amid nationwide unrest and violence on Aug 6, the day after the Sheikh Hasina government fell, when 209 prisoners scaled the walls and made off from Kashimpur Central Jail.
Authorities reported that six people were killed in clashes with security personnel during the incident.
On Jul 17, 2013, Kazi Zahurul Islam Babu, a stationary shopkeeper, was murdered in the central Monipur area of Mirpur, Dhaka. Emdadul, along with his two brothers and several others, was accused of stabbing him to death after luring him from his home.
On May 30, 2022, a special judge's court in Dhaka sentenced Emdadul to death, while his two brothers and three other accused received life imprisonment.
The High Court has yet to conclude the death reference hearing to confirm the death sentence.
