Interns at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital have launched a strike in Barishal, protesting a doctor’s assault and demanding workplace safety amid ongoing health sector reforms.

Hospital Director Brig Gen AKM Mashiul Munir said the strike began at 3pm on Sunday.

However, three hours later, mid-level physicians resumed emergency services under police protection and at the director’s request.

Munir said, “Students protested in front of the hospital. Around 2pm, a doctor was assaulted, and two people, including an employee, were injured when a brick was thrown at the hospital.

“The hospital staff are suffering from insecurity. The doctors left after 2pm out of fear.”

He added that later, patients and their relatives had been upset after not receiving treatment, and the doctors were requested to return. After 5pm, they were brought back to work with police assistance.
