Police have arrested a “mentally unstable” woman over killing her 95-year-old mother by hacking in Harirampur Upazila of Manikganj.

The incident took place around 10:30am on Tuesday in Madhyadhusuria village of Gala Union, said Harirampur Police Station chief Afzal Hossain.

The deceased has been identified as Rezia Begum, 95.

The arrestee Rokeya Begum, 60, is the daughter of the deceased and the wife of the late Malek of Hatipara.

Police officer Afzal said, "In the morning, Rokeya hacked her mother Rezia to death with a kitchen machete found in the house. Later, she called her elder brother Mofazzal Hossain's son Russell and told him that she had hacked his grandmother.

“When the matter came to light, the neighbours found Rezia's body lying in a pool of blood on the bed.”

According to locals, Rokeya had been “mentally ill” since her husband's death.

When informed, police went to the scene and prepared an inquest report of the body. Then they sent it to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for a postmortem, the police station chief said.

Rezia's grandson Russell said, "Aunt hacked grandmother to death and called out to everyone saying that she had killed her. She (Aunt) even asked them to call the police."

Afzal said the daughter of the deceased was arrested and legal action in the incident was under way.
