A 5.7-magnitude earthquake near Narsingdi has left at least four people dead, with reports emerging from several areas of cracked buildings and chunks of plaster falling away.

The tremor struck at 10:38am on Friday.

In Dhaka’s Bangshal area, three pedestrians were killed when a building’s railing collapsed during the shaking. In Narayanganj’s Rupganj Upazila, a 10-month-old child died after a wall gave way.

By midday, the Fire Service released a list of the damage reports it had received from different locations:

1. Two units from the Sadarghat and Siddikbazar stations responded to reports that an eight-storey building had collapsed in Armanitola's Kosaituli. Firefighters found that only some loose plaster and bricks had fallen, with the structure itself intact. No casualties were found.

2. A brick fell from an under-construction building onto a neighbouring two-storey house in Khilgaon, injuring one person. Local residents took the victim to the hospital.

3. A fire was reported in a residential building on Baridhara's Road No. 5. Two units from Baridhara Fire Station brought the fire under control. Officials said it was not yet clear whether the fire was related to the earthquake.

4. Reports were received that an eight-storey building was leaning onto another structure in Sutrapur's Swamibagh. Fire Service personnel from Sutrapur were sent to inspect the site.

5. A report of structural damage at one of the office buildings at the Chief Advisor's Office complex prompted an inspection by the Satellite Fire Station. No damage was found.

6. A seven-storey building was reported to be leaning on Kalabagan's Abedkhali Road. A unit from Mohammadpur Fire Station responded. There were no injuries, and the building was assessed to be sound. Officials said residents had called in fear.

7. A house fire broke out Munshiganj's Gazaria and two units from the Gazaria Fire Station were deployed.
