Police have arrested three suspects after a 30-year-old rickshaw-puller was allegedly picked up from his house and beaten to death in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon Upazila.
Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abdullah Al Mamun said the murder took place on Thursday night in connection with a “prior feud” over a property boundary with a neighbour.
The victim, Alam Miah, was the son of Saharuddin of Porshipara village of Gafargaon Union.
Police identified the arrestees as Abdul Quader, 55, Mohammad Mazaharul, 30, and Mohammad Imran Islam, 25.
Alam's family had been in a long-standing land dispute with neighbour Aman Miah, leading to a confrontation between the two sides on Thursday morning, according to police.
At one stage, Alam struck Aman's mother, Asia Begum, on the head.
In retaliation for the attack, Aman and his and his family members forced Alam to their house, locked him in a room and beat him in turns, leaving the rickshaw-puller dead on the spot, said ASP Mamun.
Soon afterwards, they left his body in the front yard and fled the scene after locking the house, he added.
The three suspects, however, were then arrested in overnight raids.
Alam’s cousin Mehedi Hasan said the attackers vandalised the deceased’s rickshaw before picking him up from his house around 2pm.
"When my aunt started looking for her son around 4pm, she came to know about him being trapped and beaten at Aman's house,” he said.
“Later in the evening, after she called the national emergency service 999, the police came and recovered Alam's body."
There were multiple bruises all over his body, added Mehedi.
The body was sent to a local hospital for a postmortem examination.
