A case has been filed against 20 BNP-leaning lawyers in Barishal, including the president of the district bar association, over allegations of boycotting courts, creating chaos in the courtroom, and behaving inappropriately with judges.
The case was lodged on Wednesday under the Speedy Trial Act at Kotwali Model Police Station by Rajib Majumdar, bench assistant of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court in Barishal.
The key suspect, SM Sadiqur Rahman Lincoln, president of the Barishal District Bar Association, has been arrested and sent to jail through a court order.
Kotwali Model Police chief Al Mamun Ul Islam said: “Court bench assistant filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act. The case names 12 individuals and includes eight unidentified suspects.”
Those named are: Mirza Riazul Islam, general secretary of the Barishal District Bar Association; Abul Kalam Azad, public prosecutor of the Barishal District and Sessions Judges’ Court; Nazimuddin Panna, public prosecutor of the Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court and convenor of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum; former president of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Association Mohsin Montu; Mizanur Rahman; Abdul Malek; Saeed Chowdhury, assistant public prosecutor of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal; Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bablu, assistant public prosecutor of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court; Tarek Al Imran, assistant public prosecutor of the Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court and former president of Barishal District Chhatra Dal; Abul Kalam Azad Emon, member secretary of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum; and Basiruddin Sabuj.
According to the complaint, tensions erupted on Feb 24 during a bail hearing in a case. The lawyers in question announced a boycott of the Chief and Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrates’ Courts in Barishal.
They allegedly shouted provocative and offensive slogans in the court premises, creating an atmosphere of fear and panic among litigants and severely disrupting the normal judicial environment.
According to the complaint, around 2:30pm that day, the suspects suddenly entered the courtroom of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate SM Shariyatullah, ordered lawyers conducting hearings to stop their work, and began issuing threats.
At one point, Lincoln ordered all lawyers present to immediately leave the courtroom.
He allegedly pushed one lawyer out of the courtroom, while lawyer Mizanur Rahman rudely instructed the judge to step down from the bench. The suspects also pushed GR officer Shambhu Kanchi Lal and court inspector Tarek Biswas out of the courtroom.
The agitated lawyers later vandalised parts of the courtroom, breaking the dais, microphones, benches, and tables.
They also tore up important court documents, cause lists, and case registers, the complaint alleges, severely disrupting judicial proceedings.
