A Dhaka court has asked why TikTok personality Abdullah Al Mamun, better known as Prince Mamun, should not have his bail cancelled in a case filed by social media figure Laila Akhter over assault and threats.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday after hearing an application from Laila’s lawyer Ishrat Hasan.
Ishrat alleged that Mamun repeatedly threatened her client to withdraw the case.
“Multiple general diaries were filed over the threats, and police found evidence to submit a chargesheet. The accused is still intimidating the complainant. We request his bail be cancelled,” Ishrat told the court.
Defence lawyer Habib Ullah argued, “There is no cause to cancel bail at this stage. A chargesheet has been submitted, and we will face trial. We will prove his innocence during the trial.”
After hearing both sides, the judge issued a show-cause notice asking Mamun why his bail should not be withdrawn.
The plaintiff’s side also sought to add two witnesses -- Laila’s security guard Shahidul Islam Mintu and tenant Aminul Islam Raju -- but the judge ruled they could be called later if the prosecution deemed necessary, after charge-sheeted witnesses finished testifying.
Laila gave her statement in court on Wednesday, followed by cross-examination from Mamun’s lawyer, which could not be completed. The next date, Sept 29, was set for continuation, Mamun’s lawyer Sadekul Islam Bhuiyan said.
Laila had filed the case on Jun 9, 2023, accusing Mamun of rape. He was arrested in Cumilla the next day but secured bail on Jul 1. Investigators submitted a chargesheet on Sep 26, 2024, alleging that Mamun gained social media fame on TikTok while Laila was already well known online.
According to the chargesheet, Mamun befriended Laila online, later moved into her Dhaka residence with his mother in Jan 2022, frequently hosted his parents there, promised to marry her but stalled repeatedly. On Mar 14, 2024, he allegedly raped her.
The court framed charges on Feb 4 this year, beginning trial proceedings.
