The Advisory Council has greenlighted the draft Police Commission Ordinance, 2025, despite objections.
It is one of two laws the interim government has been accused of rushing through just before the general election.
The other ordinance, concerning foreign funding for NGOs, received approval during the council meeting on Nov 29.
On that day, the Police Commission draft was also discussed, but the council decided not to approve it immediately, instructing that it be presented in a more detailed and revised form at the next meeting.
The meeting took place at the office of the Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in Tejgaon on Thursday, with him presiding.
Before the ordinances were presented to the Advisory Council, the BNP raised objections to both the Police Commission and the NGO ordinances.
The party believes the interim government has “hidden motives” for enacting such laws ahead of the election.
In a statement on Nov 28, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: “We have learnt from reliable sources that the interim government is trying to pass two laws in great haste -- one a revised police commission law, the other related to NGOs.
He added that such “hurried” legislation ahead of the national election could “obstruct” the democratic transition.
RPO AMENDMENT
As preparations continue for the schedule of the parliamentary polls and the referendum, another round of changes to electoral laws and rules has been approved through an amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
Postal votes will now be counted alongside general votes, while ballots with multiple seals will be invalid, Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan said at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.
The Election Commission (EC) said the amendments have been coordinated with the Referendum Ordinance following the introduction of postal voting.
