A court has ordered that Sajjad Hossain alias Chhoto Sajjad, a "top-listed criminal" in Chattogram, and his wife be placed under arrest in connection with the killing of a madrasa student during last year's student-led mass uprising.

The order was issued by Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique following a hearing on Sunday. The decision was reported on Monday.

Investigators had applied last week for Sajjad and his wife Tamanna, identified by a single name, to be formally arrested in the case filed at Kotwali Police Station.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said the court approved the request after reviewing an application by the investigating officer. He added that Sajjad appeared at the hearing virtually from Rajshahi Jail, while his wife joined from Feni Jail.

According to case documents, large crowds gathered in Chattogram’s Laldighi Paar and New Market areas on Aug 5 last year to take part in demonstrations organised by the Students Against Discrimination movement.

The case alleges that armed activists linked to the Awami League and its affiliated organisations attacked the protesters. During the violence, a 21-year-old madrasa student, Md Nizam Uddin, was shot near Laldighi Paar.

He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His father later filed a murder case over the killing.
