Britain will support Bangladesh’s democratic journey, says Cooke

The envoy calls July Uprising “one of the most significant moments in Bangladesh’s history”

The United Kingdom will support Bangladesh in its efforts to build a democratic, inclusive and prosperous future, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke has said.

Speaking at a reception in Dhaka marking the birthday of King Charles III, the envoy reflected on political upheaval in the country and renewed Britain's commitment to working closely with Bangladesh in the months ahead.

“Since we celebrated his majesty’s birthday last year, Bangladesh has undergone monumental change,” she said.

Cooke described July Uprising 2024 as “one of the most significant moments in the country’s history”.

“The world was shocked by the violence we witnessed,” she said. “Many of those killed or injured were young people protesting for fair treatment, for democracy, and for a better future.

“We remember all those who lost their lives last summer.”

She said the UK remains committed to standing beside Bangladesh as it works to stabilise and shape its political future.

Cooke noted that recent steps taken by the interim government--across democratic, social and economic spheres--mark “important progress” toward that goal.

Despite the challenges of the past year, Cooke said the UK-Bangladesh partnership has grown “stronger”.

Following the government change, the UK has worked closely with Bangladesh Bank.

“We’ve worked closely with the honourable governor and his team, providing expertise on key structural economic reforms and on asset recovery,” Cooke said.
