Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of M Hafizuddin Khan, a former adviser to the caretaker government and a prominent civil society figure.
In a condolence message issued on Thursday, Yunus recalled the deceased’s long career in public service and his contributions to the welfare of the state and its people.
“M Hafizuddin Khan was an honest, wise and responsible statesman. His dedication and moral stance in public service will remain an exemplary example for us,” the chief advisor said.
He also spoke of a personal bond with Khan, describing him as a classmate and close friend.
“In my personal life too, he was a classmate and close friend of mine. His wisdom, humanity and outspokenness enriched me at various times in my life. Through his death, I have lost a trusted colleague and friend,” Yunus said.
The chief advisor said the nation would remember with respect the honesty, dedication and efficiency that Khan demonstrated throughout his career, as well as his role in later efforts to establish good governance in the state.
In the message, Yunus prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Khan died at his residence in Uttara’s Sector 1 on Wednesday at 7pm due to natural causes, according to his cousin Liaquat Ali.
He served as secretary of the posts and telecommunications ministry and was an advisor to several ministries, including finance and planning, during the 2001 caretaker government.
Khan also chaired the central executive committee of SHUJAN, served as Transparency International Bangladesh’s chairman, and held leadership roles in Basic Bank Limited, Rupali Bank, and Agrani Bank.
After retiring nearly 15 years ago, he lived in Uttara with his wife.
Known for his integrity, he was the son of late teacher Kobbad Ali. He is survived by his wife and two daughters living in Canada.
