The two-day road march to Chattogram Port has ended with hopes that the interim government will retreat from all forms of “anti-national” activities, including involving foreign companies in port management.
Speakers voiced such hopes at the concluding rally of the road march organised by the “Anti-Imperialism Patriotic People” opposite the port building on Saturday.
Ruhin Hossain Prince, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), said: “We have come to Chattogram after carrying out a two-day road march programme from Dhaka to save the port and block the corridor.
“Along the way, members of the public expressed their solidarity with our demands.
"Chattogram Port is a profitable institution. It should not be leased to foreigners in any way. We have completed the road march.”
Expressing hope that the government will retreat from “anti-national and anti-sovereign activities,” he warned that if it proceeds with handing over the port to foreign management, a stricter programme will be announced after Aug 5.
The road march reached outside the port building around 4:45pm on Saturday.
The protest began on Friday from the National Press Club in Dhaka, demanding the cancellation of initiatives to involve foreign companies in port management and to establish a “humanitarian corridor” in Myanmar’s Rakhine.
The platform spearheading the movement comprises leaders from various left-leaning political groups.
The programme was first announced on Jun 21 in Dhaka.
Starting from Dhaka on Friday, they held rallies in Cumilla and Feni.
After holding roadside rallies in Mirsarai and Sitakunda, they gathered at the Barik Building intersection in the city before marching towards the port.
