The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man who fled Chattogram after killing his son and his “second wife”.
A RAB-7 team, in collaboration with a RAB-9 team, arrested the two of them from the South Surma area of Sylhet city on Monday night.
The arrestees are Md Nuruzzaman, 55, and Anwara Begum, 40. Anwara is a resident of Sylhet’s Jaintapur.
On Sept 10, Nuruzzaman – a Saudi expatriate – stabbed his 24-year-old son Md Shahed at his home in Mirsharai Upazila when he protested his father’s second marriage. He then fled with Anwara.
Shahed was taken to the Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex, where a doctor declared him dead.
After the murder, Atiqur Rahman, chief of Mirsharai Police Station, said that Nuruzzaman had two daughters and a son. He returned to the country last May after living in Saudi Arabia for a long time. The day before the incident, Nuruzzaman started living at his house in Mayani Union with a woman from Sylhet. His wife and children then protested.
During an argument between them, Nuruzzaman stabbed his son Shahed and fled.
A press release by RAB-7 on Tuesday said that Nuruzzaman had been in Saudi Arabia for 30-35 years. His family learnt that he had been living with a woman there for the past six or seven years. When Nuruzzaman's wife asked him about it, he cut off contact with the family and stopped providing them assistance.
On May 18, Nuruzzaman returned to the country and stayed in a rented house with his wife and children in the city. Then, on Aug 11, he brought Anwara to his younger daughter's wedding, introducing her as his friend’s wife.
Nuruzzaman moved into his Mirsharai house with his second wife on Sept 9. Upon receiving the news, his wife and children went home the next day. Seeing them, Nuruzzaman and Anwara, who introduced herself as his second wife, used a knife to try and kill his first wife Kamrul Jahan. When Shahed attempted to block them, Nuruzzaman stabbed him.
Nuruzzaman's wife Kamrul filed a case over the murder with the Mirsharai Police Station, accusing him and Anwara.
RAB said Nuruzzaman was arrested from a bus counter in the Humayun Rashid Chattar area of South Surma Thana in Sylhet on Monday night, and Anwara was arrested from a residential hotel in the area based on information from him.
