A Dhaka court has rejected the bail application by social media star Abdullah Al Mamun aka Prince Mamun, who was arrested in a case over beating his wife for a dowry of Tk 10 million.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail made the decision after a hearing on Thursday, said Sub-Inspector Md Bhulu Mia of the Prosecution Division.

On Jul 23, Prince Mamun attempted suicide by tying a saree to a ceiling fan during a Facebook Live broadcast from his house in the Bashundhara Residential Area.

His wife Atqiya Faizah Mohona filed a case against him over the incident.

Previously, Mohona had filed another case against Mamun on charges of beating her after demanding a dowry of Tk 10 million.

On Jul 24, Mamun’s bail in the case was rejected and he was sent to jail.

The next day, on Jul 25, an application was filed to show Mamun arrested in a case filed by Mohona on charges of attempting suicide. On that basis, the court on Wednesday showed Mamun arrested in a separate case.

On Thursday, Mamun's lawyers Palash Chandra Roy and Abdullah Al Mamun petitioned for bail on his behalf. Mohona also appeared in court to oppose the bail.

Mamun's lawyer Abdullah told the court, "The plaintiff and the accused are a sweet couple. We have seen that on social media. The plaintiff has filed a case alleging that she was beaten to demand Tk 10 million in dowry. There is no medical certificate attached."

He said, "When does one ask for Tk 10 million in dowry? When one can afford it. You can’t just give such a sum when someone asks. There is a video of the incident. In it, I saw that the plaintiff also injured the accused. A wife can also beat her husband."

The lawyer noted that the name of an individual named Likhon had come up in connection with the case. He drew attention to Likhon’s ties to Mohona and to Mamun’s ex-wife Laila as well.

Abdullah said, "It is not that [Mamun] beat Mohona. There was a fight. The two of them hit each other. I ask for his (Prince Mamun's) bail."

Mohona was standing in the witness box during the hearing. The judge asked her if Prince Mamun was very famous. Mohona responded that he was famous.

"Did you marry him knowing that he was famous?" the judge asked.

In response, Mohona said: "We were married five months ago. They have tortured me a lot in these five months."

The plaintiff's lawyer Sarkar Sabbir Hossain opposed the bail. He said, "They were married five months ago. Since then, he has borrowed money several times. He asked for a dowry, and beat her for the dowry."

After hearing from both sides, the court rejected Mamun's bail.

The case details say that since Mamun's marriage to model Mohona, the couple have had disputes on a number of issues.

"Prince Mamun has been indulging in extramarital affairs with women of different ages and is addicted to drugs. When Mohona would ask him anything, he would beat her. Immediately after they got married, the accused demanded a dowry of Tk 10 million from her to open a shop. When she refused to pay, he physically and mentally abused Mohona,” the case claims.

“In continuation of this, on Thursday at around 12:30am, Mamun came to Mohona’s house in Bhatara’s Bashundhara Residential Area in an intoxicated state and demanded a dowry of Tk 10 million. He asked Mohona to bring the money from her father’s house.”

It alleges, “When Mohona refused to pay the money, Mamun had an argument with her. At one stage, Mamun grew agitated, abused her with obscene language, and started indiscriminately punching and kicking her.

“During the beating, he also tried to strangle her by squeezing her throat. As a result, Mohona suffered a bloody wound under her left eye and a bruise on her right ear, along with injuries on different parts of her body.”
