Police have received permission to take Sibyoun Diu and Sanjay Chisim back into custody for another five days of questioning in connection to the shooting of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after hearing the application from the investigating officer on Sunday.

The suspects were produced in court during the hearing following their initial three-day grilling.

Inspector Faysal Ahmed of the Detective Branch's Motijheel zonal team, the investigating officer, requested a fresh seven days to interrogate them.

The defendants had no legal representation in court. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi presented arguments in favour of the interrogation.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) initially announced the detention of the pair for questioning on Dec 15.

Following the interrogation, they were formally arrested in connection with the case.

The application said that a man named “Philip” has been identified with a single name as the mastermind behind a border-crossing syndicate. Sibyoun and Sanjay allegedly operated under his leadership.

Extensive questioning is required to locate Philip and arrange for his arrest.

The investigation also aims to identify other associates of the syndicate and determine who communicated with Philip over the “mission to kill”.

The other suspects arrested in the case are key suspect Faisal Karim Masud’s father Md Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, his wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and close friend Maria Akhter Lima, associates Md Kabir, Sibyoun, and Sanjay, and rent-a-car businessman Md Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Uzzal.

Faisal’s parents have given confessional statements in court.

Nuruzzaman was sent to prison following his remand, while the other suspects remain in custody.

Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, filed an attempt-to-murder case with Paltan Police on Dec 14 with the family’s consent in connection with the attack on Hadi.

Hadi was attacked in Bijoynagar. He was riding in an electric rickshaw when an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle shot him in the head.

Gravely injured, Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Evercare Hospital.

He was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on Dec 15. He died while undergoing treatment there on Thursday.
