A young man has been allegedly beaten to death in Gopalganj over accusations of stealing a rickshaw.

Inspector (Investigation) Nayan Chandra Debnath of Gopalganj Police Station said the body was recovered on Wednesday night from a multi-storey building in front of the Kazi Office in the Madhyamiyapara area of the town.

The deceased, Al Amin Sheikh, 30, was a native of Khatiyagor village in Durgapur Union of Sadar Upazila.

He used to drive a battery-powered rickshaw owned by Md Kamrul Thakur. In addition to running the rickshaw garage, Kamrul also worked as the caretaker of a house belonging to Dr MD Robiul Islam Tuhin on Sharif Liton Road in the Madhyamiyapara area. The garage was located next to that multi-storey building.

Kamrul lived in a flat on the second floor of the building. Al Amin’s body was recovered from the bathroom of that flat.

Al Amin’s mother, Amena Begum, said that a rickshaw from the garage had been stolen a few days earlier, and her son was suspected in the incident. On Wednesday afternoon, Kamrul went to their house, called her son outside, and also asked her to come along.

A short while later, Amena arrived at Kamrul’s residence and found the door locked from the inside. After repeated knocking, Kamrul’s son opened the door. She then entered the flat and found her son’s body lying in the bathroom.

She said Kamrul later left the house with his son.

Lima Begum, a tenant living on the ground floor, told journalists that after hearing noise, she went upstairs and saw Amena crying and banging her head against the wall. Seeing no one else in the room, she looked inside and found a body lying beside the bathroom door. Amena told Lima that her son was dead.

She added, “I called Kamrul Thakur on his mobile phone and said, ‘Such a major incident has happened, and I knew nothing about it. Inform the police immediately; I am notifying the locals.’ Later, with the help of locals, the police were informed.”

Inspector Debnath said that the police, PBI, and DB are investigating the case. Preliminary findings suggest it is a murder.

The body will be sent to the hospital for a post-mortem. The actual cause of death will be determined after the report is received. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are ongoing.
