Law Minister Asaduzzaman says that 4,041,924 cases were at the trial phase in Bangladesh’s lower courts at the end of the previous year.
To reduce the backlog, the government has created 871 courts and 232 posts for judges, he said in response to a question from BNP MP Jahandar Ali Miah during a question-and-answer session in parliament on Thursday.
Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal presided over the session.
Asaduzzaman said the government is also in the process of creating 304 judge posts, as well as recruiting 150 new civil judges.
In addition, the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission has recommended the appointment of 708 judicial employees for the vacant posts of stenotypist, stenographer, office assistant and driver for subordinate courts nationwide.
The process of recruiting 553 more employees for various other posts is also under way.
The law minister said the current government is firmly committed to alleviating the suffering of the common people seeking justice and resolving the backlog of cases.
Summons Via SMS and Voice Call
Law Minister Asaduzzaman also highlighted the recent amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure to make the judicial process faster and easier.
An amendment to the code had added a provision allowing the issuing of summons through SMS and voice calls.
In addition, the minister said provisions have been made for filing plaints and written replies through affidavits and direct interrogation.
Asaduzzaman said a provision has also been added to allow direct filing of applications in the main case instead of filing a separate case for the issuance of a decree.
