In the same Upazila, eight college students from Dhaka were rescued from the Ruposhi waterfall by police and Fire Service after becoming stranded in the flash floods caused by heavy rains.
The three lost hikers were rescued from the Melkhum trail on Wednesday, where Fire Service found the bodies of the two other travellers.
The dead have been identified by the single names Galib and Hridoy, who were both students of Feni Polytechnic Institute.
The lost hikers have been identified with the single names as Raihan, Sayem, and Miraj. Raihan is also a Feni Polytechnic Institute student.
According to Jorarganj Police chief Abdul Halim, the three students from Feni and the two locals had entered the hills separately on Tuesday, but later met and continued hiking together. Galib and Hridoy died after falling into a mountain stream.
Due to poor mobile network coverage in the area, the remaining three were unable to call for help, becoming stranded.
Sayem’s father began searching for him once he could not be reached on his cellphone. At Melkhum, he found a phone that later received a call, which helped piece together what had happened.
He then alerted police and fire services. Rescue teams arrived at the scene, retrieved the three survivors in weak condition, and admitted them to hospital. The two bodies were discovered soon after.
Baraiyarhat Senior Fire Station Officer Zainal Abedin told bdnews24.com that they had received a missing persons alert for five people around 1:30pm and traced the group using mobile signals.
The spot where the survivors were found was deep in the hills. They had spent the entire night there, unable to get out.
According to police and Fire Service, the incident occurred when one of the students dropped his phone while walking through the stream. As he tried to retrieve it, he slipped, and two others fell in while trying to help, both drowning in the process.
Eight students from Dhaka became stranded while visiting the Ruposhi Waterfall. Heavy rain had turned the narrow mountain paths into raging streams.
The students are from Dhaka College, World University, and a university in Saidpur.
After a long trek to Mirsharai from Sitakunda, the group was on its way back when they saw the mountain streams turn into torrents due to heavy rain, leaving them stranded.
Although four of the students were strong swimmers, they could not assist the others. A member of the group contacted the national emergency hotline on 999 to request urgent help.
Upon receiving the alert, a rescue team from the Mirsharai Fire Service Station was dispatched to the site, accompanied by an ambulance. A unit from Mirsharai Police Station also responded to the call.
Amid the pouring rain, the teams trekked to the location and used ropes as makeshift ziplines to help each person cross the strong current safely.
One of the rescued students, Mishta Ahmed Nur Nabi, told bdnews24.com that they panicked and also called friends for help. It took rescuers nearly two hours to reach them.
