A member of the UPDF Ganatantrik faction has been shot dead in Khagrachhari’s Panchhari.

The incident took place in the Islampur area of Panchhari around 6am on Thursday, said Panchhari Police Station chief Md Ferdous Wahid.

The deceased, Md Emon Hossain, 25, hailed from Panchhari’s Mohammadpur.

Amar Chakma, organiser of UPDF Ganatantrik, said: "The deceased Emon Hossain was an associate member of our party. He did not stay at home for security reasons. However, he went home on Wednesday night to visit his pregnant wife."

“While he was out for a walk in front of his house in the morning, armed terrorists from UPDF (Prasit) opened fire on him. Emon died on the spot.”

However, no statement was received from the UPDF on this matter. Attempts to contact UPDF spokesperson Angya Marma were unsuccessful, as his mobile number was found to be switched off.

Police officer Wahid said that the body of Emon was recovered and it would be sent to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem.

Necessary legal action will be taken following an investigation, he added.
