He resigned as member of the newly unveiled National Executive Committee on Wednesday, accusing the BNP of filling its National Standing Committee and vice-chairman posts with controversial figures.
Better known as ‘Econo Kamal’, the owner of GQ Group is accused alongside BNP chief Khaleda Zia in the Anti Corruption Commission’s case over graft in Zia Orphanage Trust.
He had also won in the highly-controversial by-election in Magura in 1994.
Kamal, former president of the BNP in Magura, gave local journalists copies of the resignation letter he had sent to party chief Khaleda.
He did not name anyone specific in the letter, but wrote “an individual who was controversial after 1/11 has been made vice chairman” and “he has been dividing the BNP’s supporters in Magura”.
The Standing Committee, the party’s highest policy-making body, has included such shady individuals that it was not possible to be in politics with them at the cost of one’s “self-esteem”, he wrote.
Kamal’s victory in the by-election for Magura-2 brought with it allegations of massive rigging against the BNP, the ruling party of the time.
The system of having elections under a caretaker government was adopted after the Awami League began massive protests over the results of the by-election.
Kamal was elected from the same constituency in the 2001 general election which installed the BNP back in power.
The Awami League had then alleged that a conspiracy to defeat it in the polls was hatched at the businessman’s home in Dhaka.
The BNP on Saturday unveiled new faces for its Standing Committee, an advisory council of 73 members and a hefty Executive Committee with 502 members.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names approved by party supremo Khaleda Zia at a press conference, more than four months after the party held its National Council.
Khaleda’s adviser Mosaddek Ali Falu, and Assistant Publication Secretary Shamimur Rahman Shamim quit soon after the announcement, while other senior leaders have openly shared their disappointment with the media.
