Police have prevented people from gathering at Dhanmondi 32 road on independence architect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary, stopping people from paying their respects.
Restrictions also came from groups opposing the Awami League.
On Friday, some visitors were assaulted while attempting to pay tribute to Bangabandhu.
Meanwhile, outside the Bangabandhu’s Dhanmondi 32 residence, a large screen played music as some people danced, and a speech by Maj Dalim, a convict in the Bangabandhu assassination case, was also broadcast.
At the scene in the afternoon, Dhanmondi police chief (OC) said they were acting under instructions from the chief advisor’s press secretary.
Following this, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam denied giving any such orders to police.
Later, the OC said he would “expunge” his earlier comment.
Since Thursday evening, Dhanmondi 32 road became lively and heavily secured.
Police blocked both entrances with barbed wire fences, deploying water cannons and armoured vehicles.
From Thursday night, a group of locals held repeated rallies demanding the execution of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir were seen among the crowd.
That night, a truck carrying large speakers and a big screen was brought to the site.
Periodically, the documentary on the “July genocide” was shown, while some people danced to music.
Later at night, people were seen dancing to music played through the speakers and monitors.
From Friday morning, police stopped public from entering Dhanmondi 32.
The same truck brought in the night before was used during the day to broadcast a speech by Maj Dalim.
The screen displayed his picture along with the caption, “Major Dalim’s historic speech”.
Despite the heavy police presence, a group distributing sweets spoke to the media.
Members of the People’s Activist Coalition (PAC) described the day as “Najat Dibosh” while handing out sweets and inviting police personnel to partake, though police declined.
Before this, they spoke to the media from inside the police perimeter.
