Four members of a family, including two children, have been burnt in a fire triggered by a “mobile charger” explosion in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon.
Sonargaon Police Inspector Mohammad Rashedul Hasan Khan said the incident occurred on the second floor of a six-storey building on Saturday morning.
The injured have been admitted to the capital’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The injured have been identified as Md Alauddin, 35, a garment worker; his two daughters Shifa Akter, 14, and Shimla Akter, 4; and their grandmother Jarina Begum, 65.
The burn institute’s Resident Surgeon Shaon bin Rahman said the victims suffered burn injuries between 12 percent and 40 percent.
Alauddin suffered the worst injury.
Police officer Rashed said the family lived in that house where the fire broke out following an explosion of a “mobile charger.”
Abdullah Al Arefin, a deputy assistant director at the Fire Service, said they visited the house in the afternoon.
“A kitchen is located next to the room where the fire occurred. We believe the room had gas leaked from the kitchen accumulated,” he added.
Alauddin heard a loud explosion while in the toilet around 4:30am and soon rushed into the room to find his bed caught fire with his mother and daughter already burnt, said Salma Akhter, sister of Alauddin.
He got injured trying to douse the fire.
