Police say a homeless youth arrested after two burnt bodies were recovered in an abandoned building in Savar has confessed to killing six people.
The man was arrested after reviewing CCTV footage, police said.
Additional Police Superintendent Arafatul Islam shared the information at a press conference at Savar Model Police Station on Monday afternoon.
The officer said police will seek 10 days to interrogate in their custody the suspect, identified as Moshiur Rahman Khan Shamrat who was sent to court.
Around 9pm, Inspector Helal Uddin said the plea had yet to be approved.
The Detective Branch (DB) arrested the 35-year-old suspect on Sunday.
He hailed from Bank Colony in Savar and is homeless, police said.
Moshiur’s first victim was an old woman named Asma Begum, 75, whose body was found near Savar Model Mosque along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway on Jul 4.
On Aug 29, Moshiur killed a youth in the abandoned building of the Savar Municipality Community Centre, said Arafatul.
Police recovered the body of a 30-year-old unidentified woman on Oct 11 from the community centre. The burnt body of a man was recovered from the same place on Dec 19.
CCTV was installed at the place following the recoveries of the bodies. Footage from CCTV showed Moshiur was carrying a dead body over his shoulder, leading to his arrest.
The identities of five of the victims could not be known, police said.
