MM Shariful Karim, a professor of English, has been appointed the vice-chancellor of Comilla University.
The Ministry of Education announced the appointment for a four-year term on Thursday.
Shariful is the founding chairman of the university’s English department and has been serving it since 2007.
He completed his bachelor's and Master's degrees in English literature from Chittagong University.
Prof Shariful obtained his PhD degree in English Literary Studies from the International Islamic University, Malaysia.
Before his appointment at Comilla University, he had joined the 18th BCS Education Cadre batch in 1999.
In his career spanning more than 25 years, he taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising several MA thesis.
He is currently supervising four MPhil students from different universities.
Prof Shariful has also served in a renowned Malaysian university.
He also has 10 years of administrative experience, including governance, policy roles, formation of rules and addressing academic issues.
He has also been a syndicate member, dean, academic advisor and curriculum expert at his current workplace and other universities.
The newly appointed VC has also been serving as the vice president of the central committee of the pro-BNP University Teachers Association of Bangladesh.
On his appointment in the new role, Prof Shariful said: “I express my gratitude for being selected as the vice-chancellor of Comilla University. I am aware of all the advantages and disadvantages of this university.
“It may not be possible to solve everything overnight, but the government and we will try to solve everything according to our capabilities. For this, everyone's cooperation is needed.”
