A child among six individuals have been brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment after suffering gunshot wounds during a two-hour clash that ensued following a ‘mob assault’ on police near Shanir Akhra near Dhaka’s Jatrabari.

The 2-year-old child was wounded by gunfire within the confines of a residential gate on Wednesday.

According to police, the assailants did not appear affiliated with the student-led quota reform movement.

Police reinforcements were sent to different places during the tense situation, said Md Alauddin, an assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Wari zone.

Around 5:15pm, a group of people reached the Shanir Akhra area and attacked the police, causing injuries to four officers.

The clash with the attackers lasted for approximately two hours until additional police arrived in the area, ADC Alauddin told bdnews24.com.

Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to regain control, leading to a halt in vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

ADC Alauddin said in addition to the police personnel and attackers, several pedestrians were also injured in the clash.

Deputy Commissioner Md Iqbal Hossain of Wari Division said: "Those involved in the Shanir Akhra clash are not students. There is no indication that they were protesting for quota reform."

The attackers had also vandalised several vehicles, said Inspector Zakir Hossain from Jatrabari Police Station (Investigation).

The injured have been identified as Shohag, 27, Faysal, 27, Mahim Ahmed Piyash, 17, Monirul, 20, Rahid, 2, and Babu Mia, 40. The full names of all injured individuals were not immediately available.

Babu Mia said they live on the ground floor of a five-storey house in Shanir Akhra. During the clash, when his son Rahid began crying, he brought him near the collapsible gate of the house. At that moment, pellets from the gun hit him in the face and Rahid in the chest.
