A Dhaka court has sentenced former assistant director of the Department of Narcotics Control SM Shakib Hossain and six others to different terms of imprisonment in a case of robbing a businessman of about 1,050g gold in Old Dhaka four and a half years ago.
Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shihabul Islam announced the verdict on Monday.
Former DNC driver Ibrahim Sikder has been convicted in the case along with Jibon Pal, Aminul Islam, Ratan Kumar Sen, and Emdadul Haque.
Shakib and Jibon each received eight years of rigorous imprisonment and a Tk 5,000 fine, with an additional three months in jail if unpaid.
The remaining four have been sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000, also with three months in default.
Another accused named Harun Munshi was acquitted after the charges against him were not proven.
The court's bench assistant Milon Hossain said all accused were present in the court.
However, Jibon fled before the verdict was announced. The court has issued an arrest warrant for him.
Businessman Siddiqur Rahman filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on Jan 11, 2021, alleging that two gold bars weighing 1,050g were taken from him in the Zindabahar Park area of Old Dhaka.
According to the case details, on Jan 7, 2021, several men posing as Detective Branch (DB) officers abducted Siddiqur and looted the gold.
Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rubel Mollick of Kotwali Police Station submitted a charge sheet against eight suspects on Oct 5, 2021. The court framed charges and began the trial on Mar 9, 2022. One of the accused, Alamgir Hossain, died during the proceedings.
The verdict was delivered on Monday after recording testimonies from 26 witnesses, hearing the defendants’ statements, and concluding final arguments.
