A Bangladeshi man has been shot dead near the Sylhet border after members of India's Khasi community allegedly opened fire, according to police.
The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Lova Chora border area of Kanaighat Upazila, said Mohammad Abdul Awal, chief of the local police station.
The victim, 45-year-old Jamal Uddin, was from Kandla Bangatila in Kanaighat.
Police recovered Jamal’s body early on Sunday after local residents reported finding it inside Bangladeshi territory with gunshot wounds. His body has been sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Residents said Jamal and several others had left their homes on Saturday night.
According to police, the group is believed to have crossed into India to steal betel nuts, when members of the local Khasi community opened fire.
“Several of them crossed the border and entered on the Indian side. While they were stealing betel nuts, the Indian Khasis opened fire on them. When Jamal was hit, the others brought him back,” said Awal.
