Police have secured permission to interrogate Belayet Hossain and Tofayel Hossain Topu, arrested on suspicion of terrorism in Savar and Keraniganj.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam placed the duo on a four-day police custody.
The investigating officer of the case, Inspector SM Mizanur Rahman of the DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, produced them in court and sought seven days to interrogate them in custody.
CTTC officers arrested Ahsan Zahir Khan, 50, in Dhaka’s Zia Udyan Lake on Saturday.
Police claim he is an Ehsa member of the banned militant organisation Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
A case was filed against Ahsan under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police.
Based on information obtained during Ahsan’s interrogation in custody, police arrested Belayet in Savar and Tofayel from Keraniganj on Tuesday night.
They are shown arrested in the same Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police case and to be questioned.
In the remand petition, police said an analysis of information provided by Ahsan has initially indicated the involvement of Belayet, Tofayel and several others in the case.
During interrogation, Belayet and Tofayel reportedly admitted their involvement in the incident, the petition said.
A review of Belayet’s mobile phone also suggests their links to terrorist activities.
The investigating officer told the court that the two suspects and their absconding associates are inspired by the ideology of neo-JMB.
“They gathered with the intention of planning and attempting sabotage,” he says, adding that JMB members maintain contact with one another using pseudonyms on platforms including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram.
According to the investigation, the group has been carrying out activities aimed at implementing what police describe as their “extremist goals, objectives and ideology”.
