A businessman has been hacked to death in Abhaynagar, Jashore, for not renting out a shop, police say.

The businessman was attacked in the Nawapara River Port area on Wednesday night. He died around 2:30am on Thursday on his way to Dhaka for treatment, said Abhaynagar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Jahidul Islam.

The victim, 55-year-old Anisur Rahman, was the owner of the importing company “Joint Trading” in Nawapara. He also owns a multi-storey shopping mall called “Anis Plaza” in Wapara Bazar.

Police recovered his body and sent it to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem.

Meanwhile, all businesses in Nawapara port have been closed in protest to demand justice for the murder. Meanwhile, the police said that they have started a drive to catch the perpetrator.

Inspector Zahidul said, “Shah Mahmud, son of Shah Jonayed of Pir Bari area of Nawapara, wanted to rent a shop in ‘Anis Plaza’. But Anisur Rahman did not agree to rent the shophouse to him.”

“As a consequence, Mahmud severely hacked Anisur in front of his house around 7pm on Wednesday.”

He said, “Anisur was rescued by locals in a bloodied state and first taken to the Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex. When his physical condition deteriorated there, he was transferred to the Khulna Medical College Hospital.”

“Anisur died on the way to Dhaka for advanced treatment on the advice of doctors at Khulna Medical College Hospital.”

Mahmud has been absconding since the incident. A drive is under way to arrest him, the police officer said.
