A Railway Police constable has reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot with his own service rifle while on duty in Khulna.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Khulna Railway District Office in Sonadanga Residential Area (second phase), according to Railway Police Superintendent Ahmed Mainul Hasan.

The dead constable was identified as 27-year-old Samrat Biswas from Kashiani Upazila in Gopalganj. His wife, Puja Biswas, also serves as a police member in Satkhira.

SP Mainul said Samrat was on duty at the magazine guard area early in the morning. Between 4:30 am and 5:00 am, he used his service-issued Chinese rifle to shoot himself in the head, dying instantly at the scene.

The exact reason behind the incident, however, has yet to be confirmed.

The police superintendent described Samrat as a good and diligent constable.

While preliminary findings suggest he had been struggling with frustrations stemming from family issues, he had never disclosed these matters to his colleagues.

Mainul added that the inquest on the body has been completed.

The remains will be handed over to the family upon their arrival, with formalities currently under way.
