Tarique will decide on presidential candidate from BNP, says Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the Standing Committee has authorised Chairman Tarique Rahman to decide the party's pick to run for president.

The decision was made at a Standing Committee meeting held at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan on Saturday night, with Tarique presiding over it.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, Fakhrul said: “From our party's side, all responsibilities for selecting the presidential candidate and timing of the election have been entrusted to the party chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.”

The committee also discussed the government's development activities, local government elections and organisational matters, he added.

Fakhrul said the Election Commission (EC) is legally required to hold the presidential election within 90 days and has already indicated that it is prepared to do so.
