Firefighters have rescued a three-and-a-half-year-old boy who fell into an abandoned borehole in Chattogram’s Raozan but he could not be saved.

Raozan Police chief Sazedul Islam said the child was brought out around 8:15pm on Wednesday and taken to Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Fire Service units received reports after 5:30pm that the son of Saiful Islam, identified only as Mezbah, had fallen into the abandoned well.

Four units rushed to the site to carry out the rescue.

“Since 5:30pm, the child could not be located. Family members told us they heard his cries from inside the well,” the officer said.

A similar tragedy occurred on Dec 10 in Rajshahi’s Tanore, when 2-year-old Sajid fell into a borehole.

After 31 hours of digging, he was rescued dead.
