Battery-powered rickshaw drivers in Chattogram have attacked and vandalised a traffic police box during a crackdown on the illegal vehicles.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night at the Khulshi Rail Gate area, where drivers smashed the North Division traffic police box.

Khulshi police chief Aftab Hossain said police teams from Khulshi and Traffic North Division had launched raids in Jalalabad, Wireless intersection and Ambagan in the afternoon.

After police moved from Wireless intersection to Ambagan, some rickshaw drivers obstructed them, while another group vandalised the police box at the rail gate.

Police detained two people, while a constable on duty was injured by bricks thrown by assailants, who also stole a sergeant’s bag.

Chattogram has seen sustained drives against battery-powered rickshaws, including clashes last April.

On Monday, city police issued a public notice urging citizens to avoid using them.
