Strong currents in the Padma River have washed away the launch terminal at Manikganj's Paturia, disrupting ferry and launch services on one of the country’s busiest river routes.
Officials said part of the No. 5 ferry terminal collapsed into the river late on Wednesday, halting operations. After two days of suspension, ferries resumed on Saturday following emergency repairs using sand-filled geo-bags.
But erosion continues to threaten the No. 4 jetty, where further protective work is under way. The launch terminal has already disappeared, forcing passengers to board from the No. 1 ferry terminal.
With strong currents slowing crossings, passengers and vehicles have been left waiting for hours.
“We’ve been waiting an hour for a ferry. Who knows when we’ll finally cross,” said Habbu, a bus driver heading to Barishal.
Another driver, Raju of AK Travels, said: “We’ve been stuck here a long time because ferries aren’t arriving. The strong current is disrupting operations badly.”
Truck driver Abul, en route to Rajbari, said heavy vehicles were facing even greater difficulties. “Because of the current, ferries carrying loaded trucks are struggling to cross the river.”
According to officials, 11 ferries are currently in operation, but crossings are taking almost twice as long as usual.
The stronger-than-usual current has also slowed launches, extending journey times.
Masud Rana, captain of the launch Anika, said: “Earlier we could reach Daulatdia in 25 minutes. Now it’s taking 50 to 60 minutes.”
Naeem, master of the launch Anannya River, added: “The erosion has reduced the docking space for launches, making travel riskier. We are now boarding passengers through the No. 1 jetty.”
