A monsoon depression sitting over southern Jharkhand and Odisha in India has raised the risk of squally winds sweeping Bangladesh's sea ports and coastal belt.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says the same system has triggered a heavy rain forecast for six divisions, including Dhaka.
A 24-hour forecast issued from 9am on Monday points to light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds across most of the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and many parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions.
It said parts of the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions could also receive moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The rain build-up had already been flagged on Sunday, when the well-marked low over the Bay of Bengal deepened into a depression.
Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid told bdnews24.com the rain would intensify further and could persist until Jul 12 or 13.
Detailing the latest update, Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque said the system advanced north-westwards from Odisha and now sits over southern Jharkhand and adjoining Odisha as a monsoon land depression, with expectations to trudge further west-northwestwards.
The meteorologist explained that the system has caused a steep pressure gradient over the North Bay and its adjacent zones, with gusty winds likely over coastal areas, seaports and the northern Bay.
The Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been told to keep hoisting local cautionary signal No.3 as a result.
All fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay have been ordered to stay in safe shelter until further notice.
Cox's Bazar recorded the country's highest rainfall, 240mm, in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday.
