A police complaint in the form of a general diary (GD) has been lodged against journalist Anis Alamgir, TV host Soma Islam, and model-lawyer Jannatul Ferdous Peya for allegedly making "objectionable" comments and spreading "disinformation" over the July Uprising on social media.

The complaint also names three others, including two models and an actress.

Shahbagh Police recorded the complaint on Saturday night, according to Sub-Inspector (SI) Majibul Alam, the station's duty officer.

The officer said the complaint was lodged by Millat Hossain, a member of an organisation named “Rashtra Songlap Forum” (State Dialogue Forum).

Majibul added that the police station subsequently accepted the complaint as a GD and assigned SI Ashraf Ali to investigate the matter.

Apart from the three high-profile figures, the complaint has been filed against Momin Mehedi, a former Chhatra League activist and columnist; model Maria Kispotta; and model-actress Shamima Islam Tusty.

The forum’s Member Secretary ANM Ayas, along with central organisers Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha and Tuhin Farazi, were present during the filing of the complaint.

The allegations against journalist Anis Alamgir -- who was arrested during the interim government's tenure and is currently out on bail -- state that following his release from prison, he "colluded with several organisations associated with Awami League, whose activities are banned, to spread confusion to disrupt the July movement”.

Soma faces allegations of "belittling the July movement on different talk shows in an attempt to rehabilitate the banned Awami League”.

Meanwhile, Peya has been accused of "taunting" the protesters and the injured in her capacity as an associate of former MP Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman.

Momin Mehedi is accused of "throwing a shoe" at the July movement memorial monument in the National Press Club in Dhaka and making misleading statements on Abu Sayed, a prominent face of the Uprising.

Moreover, the complaint states that Maria Kispotta propagated the July movement as a "terrorist movement”, while model Tusty carried out propaganda on social media, labelling the movement as a "month of fraudulence”.

Majibul noted that since the matter involves social media and cyber-related elements, the investigating officer will review the details before taking further action.
