A Dhaka-bound passenger train has derailed in Mymensingh's Gafargaon after sections of the railway track were removed.
The engine and two coaches of the Agnibina Express ran off the tracks around 5:15am on Monday, about a kilometre before Gafargaon station in the Jonomjoy area.
Gafargaon Station Master Md Hanif said railway security officials reported that miscreants removed around 20 feet of track, causing the derailment of the train, which was travelling from Tarakandi to Dhaka.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The Railway Security Force said security personnel were deployed at the scene and were working to stabilise the situation and restore rail services.
The incident comes amid ongoing unrest in the area following protests by supporters of local leaders who were denied party nominations for the upcoming general election. Demonstrations began on Saturday after Akhtaruzzaman Bachchu was named the BNP candidate for the Mymensingh-10 (Gafargaon) seat.
Since then, protesters have staged rail blockades and carried out acts of arson, according to officials.
